ArguRom

The course “Comparing Argument Marking in Romance: a focus on Romanian” will take place from 11 until 13 December 2024 at the University of Ghent.

The study of argument marking serves as a cornerstone in linguistic research, offering profound insights into syntactic structures, discourse organisation, and language typology. This course aims to reunite valuable experts in the field to present the intricacies of the phenomenon from different theoretical perspectives. It covers a range of topics including:

(a) the development of argument marking from Latin to Romance,

(b) the particularities of argument marking of modern Romanian, the least studied Romance language, preceded by an introduction to the Grammar of Romanian,

(c) the role of language contact in argument marking, and

(d) how other methods such as corpora or experimental data can offer insights into this linguistic phenomenon.

This doctoral schools course is organised with support from the Flemish Government, and research groups GLIMS and ΔiaLing.
